"La giornata dedicata alla scoperta del territorio, la seconda nel corrente anno scolastico, si è svolta sul territorio del lago di Varano. Si tratta del lago più grande dell'Italia meridionale (60,5 Kmq). Di forma quadrangolare, è separato dal mare da un cordone di sabbia lungo 10 km. e largo 1 km., detto Isola, coperta di pini, eucalipti e altre piante.Il La sua profondità si aggira mediamente sui tre metri e mezzo con punte massime che arrivano ai cinque metri e mezzo.

Secondo la documentazione di Plinio il Vecchio, nel I secolo d.C., al posto dell'attuale lago esisteva solo un'insenatura (o un golfo) definito dal naturalista latino “Seno Uriano”.

La formazione di un cordone litoraneo, avvenuta ad opera delle correnti marine e dei venti che hanno trasportato i detriti dai fiumi che hanno foce nel medio Adriatico, ha chiuso quest'insenatura marina facendo nascere in tal modo il "lago" di Varano (databile dopo l'anno 1000).

E’ alimentato da sorgenti subacquee e comunica con il mediante due passaggi navigabili, foce Varano a est e foce Capoiale a ovest. La sponda orientale è bassa e invasa da canneti, quella occidentale e meridionale sono coperte di una fitta macchia. Le sue acque sono pescosissime e in passato vi si praticava la caccia agli uccelli di palude, specialmente prima che le piane di Nuschiaturo, Carpino e Cagnano fossero prosciugate mediante grandi opere di bonifica. Durante la guerra 1915-18, il lago fu adibito a base per sommergibili e idrovolanti.



Sulla sponda orientale del lago di Varano sorge la Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso, nella quale si venera un bellissimo crocifisso ligneo risalente al 1300. Ad esso è attribuito il miracolo della pioggia del 23 aprile 1717, che salvò il raccolto dalla prolungata e tremenda siccita abbattutasi in queste zone. In ricordo di quell'evento ogni anno, nella medesima data, si svolge una solenne processione.....".

In tale territorio è situata l'azienda Giordano che ci ha ospitato per lo svolgimento della giornata studio. L'azienda svolge un'attività preminente sulle altre: l'allevamento ovino che si accompagna alla trasformazione del latte derivante per una produzione casearia incentrata soprattutto alla produzione di ricotta e formaggi vari......"
